You will see an alphabetical list of the main activities you may do at an Outward Bound Centre.

Abseiling - The mountaineers way of using the rope to get back to the bottom of the crag providing new skills and a big sense of achievement.

Boy George - The name of a giant redwood tree at Outward Bound Scotland. Roped together the whole group climbs the tree at the same time requiring exceptional teamwork.

Community Service or Eco-Service - Part of the Outward Bound Classic course. Groups spend a day assisting a conservation organisation such as the National Trust or The National Park Authority.

Cutter Sailing - Outward Bound¨ has some of the last remaining traditional sailing cutters which amply demonstrate the importance of good communication and teamwork. Available on courses in Scotland and Wales.

Canadian Canoeing - Once the basic skills are mastered these crafts are used to make journeys and expeditions.

Dinghy Sailing - Wayfarer and Pico dinghy sailing on the Dyfi Estuary in Wales give individuals the chance to take increased responsibility and decision making.

Expeditions - On the mountains, lakes and on the sea. Each Outward Bound¨ course has an expedition which involves a night out in a tent, cave or cabin. With guidance from instructors, who have been looking after themselves in the outdoors for many years, course members become highly proficient in their expedition skills.

First Aid - The Classic Course gives everyone the basics of first aid including CPR and mouth to mouth practice on a dummy.

Gorge Walking - Ascending or descending a mountain stream with scrambling and some swimming. Excellent for developing trust and group co-operation.

Group Dynamics - Short exercises which clearly demonstrate the importance of critical skills such as planning and co-operating. They will include Spiders Web, Levitation and Walk on the Wet Side!

High Ropes Courses - Built to exacting professional standards, our ropes courses are state of the art. Requiring personal skill and commitment they aid the rapid development of self-confidence.

Hill Walking - The hills of mid-Wales, The Lake District and Scotland offer some of the most dramatic scenery in the UK and the chance to learn and practice the craft of hill walking in comfort.

Jacob's Ladder - This is a wide ladder of poles which it is almost impossible to climb without the assistance of other members of your group. Trust and support are essential to complete this activity successfully.

Kayaking - Both single and double kayaks are available at Outward Bound¨. Progression to rapid white water is often possible.

Navigation - This essential skill is taught and practiced on all courses and gives great personal satisfaction and confidence when utilised at sea or in the mountains.

Orienteering - Affectionately known as “cunning running” it is a competitive application of navigation skills.

Raft Construction - All the skills of design, planning and teamwork are needed in this activity if the group wishes to cross the lake or estuary and stay dry!

Rock Climbing - All the Outward Bound¨ centres are located close to some of the most famous rock climbs in the U.K. This increasingly popular sport gives great scope for skill development, personal achievement and satisfaction.

Sea Kayaking - The coastal waters of Wales and Scotland give the opportunity for journeys in a very special environment with secluded beaches and an abundance of wildlife.

Swimming - The heated indoor pool at Outward Bound¨ Wales provides a great recreational facility as well as the chance to perfect some advanced kayaking techniques.

Trapeze - Climb to the top of the 4m pole, stand on the top and jump for the trapeze bar. It sounds unlikely but it‘s true!

Zip Wire - Launch yourself from the platform and speed down the wire to your group waiting below - memorable stuff!
