Outward Bound was not set up to change lives but to save them!

In the dark days of 1941 we were loosing hundreds of young merchant seamen in the North Atlantic - Why? Because they were inexperienced & lacked confidence. They were simply not strong enough to survive in the water when their ships were torpedoed from under them. Outward Bound was designed to give them that confidence. It was done by facing them with a series of outdoor challenges that brought out the best in them.

It assured them, in other words, that they were better than they knew. After the war it was decided to apply the very same principles for the young people of the next generation....., and the next......, AND the next!

They may not have a world war to to fight but the following generations needed every ounce of confidence they could muster as they grew up.

Some of them were lucky - they had a teacher or mentor to encourage them to be the best they could, but the REALLY LUCKY ones had Outward Bound!

For more than six decades now OB has taken young people, many of them with limited horizons, and shown them how far you can see from the top of a lakeland fell, a highland peak or a Welsh mountain - also how far they can go themselves.

Outward Bound is the organisation for for outdoor adventure in Britain. It has an unequalled safety record, something we are very proud of. As a result of this we set the benchmark by which all outdoor adventure is judged.

More than a million participants have whizzed down a high wire at one of our centres, or built a raft, or abseiled for the first time in their lives. Importantly the challenge is there for everyone to take. Low self esteem, lack of confidence and poor social skills don't discriminate. Neither do we at Outward Bound.

ADVANTAGED, DISADVANTAGED, ABLE or DISABLED - ALL HAVE THE CHANCE TO FIND THE BEST IN THEMSELVES
